Road accidents claim more than 1.35 million lives each year and leave a further 50 million injured around the world. For some years, this figure has been growing continuously. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists make up almost half of all fatalities on the road. However, such accidents can usually be avoided.

Bosch has the vision of an accident-free mobility. One of the most important drivers for this is the automation. The company’s comprehensive portfolio and commitment throughout the entire product life cycle make Bosch a formidable partner for automated driving. Bosch has not only established itself as a development partner and systems supplier for vehicle manufacturers, but also as a partner for scientists, politicians, and various other industries. Why? Combining Bosch’s specialist knowledge from the fields of mechatronics, electronics, software development, and telematics results in truly in-depth systems expertise.

Stop the Crash: a global partnership for the promotion of life-saving driving safety systems

Figures from the WHO show that around 3,700 people lose their lives in road accidents every day, with many more still suffering serious injuries. Particularly in emerging countries, the reason for this is frequently vehicles with inadequate technical equipment, which provide road users with correspondingly inadequate protection.

Despite growth in the level of population and motorization worldwide, the UN initiative “Decade of Action for Road Safety” has helped to slow the growth in the number of fatalities on the road. However, the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents is continuing to rise rapidly in many countries. To counteract this trend, the United Nations has enshrined the topic of road safety in its sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Road accidents can be anticipated and avoided – or at least mitigated – by driver assistance systems and driving safety systems. Accident-prevention technologies such as the electronic stability program (ESP®) or automatic emergency braking (AEB) are able to prevent or minimize various kinds of accidents on the road.

The “Stop the Crash” initiative, in which Bosch is also actively involved to contribute to Vision Zero, was founded in November 2015 to promote these technologies. This multi-stakeholder partnership is coordinated by the Global NCAP (Global New Car Assessment Program) consumer association.

To increase road safety the initiative aims to promote the prevalence of ESP®, AEB, motorcycle antilock braking system (ABS), and tire safety. For example, the ESP® can prevent up to 80 percent of all skidding accidents. In 2020, 82 percent of all new cars worldwide already have ESP® on board. It is mainly low- and medium-income countries which show low installation rates.

To boost the installation rates of these systems and to promote the effectiveness of the various technologies, the initiative organizes, among others, driving demonstrations at events. In doing so, “Stop the Crash” is helping the UN to reach its objective of halving the 1.35 million annual fatalities on the world’s roads by 2030.

Accident prevention technologies are tried-and-tested driving safety systems that Bosch has in its portfolio for years

The better a vehicle is equipped with assistance systems, the safer it will be when out on the roads. Alongside passive safety systems such as seat belts and airbags, active safety systems help to further reduce the number of fatalities and injuries on the road. They intervene before accidents occur and can thus help to avoid them.

Driving safety systems from Bosch such as the antilock braking system (ABS) and automatic emergency braking systems can save lives. Bosch accident research calculations show that in the EU alone, anti-skid protection has saved the lives of around 15,000 people by 2020 and prevented almost half a million accidents with personal injury.

Electronic stability program (ESP®)

ESP® assists drivers in practically all critical driving situations. It detects and actively counteracts skidding movements.

Automatic emergency braking (AEB)

AEB can detect situations where the vehicle in front is approached at critical speeds and initiate emergency braking if required.

Motorcycle antilock braking system (ABS)

The system assists with braking by preventing the wheels from locking, promotes vehicle stability, and ensures optimum deceleration while braking.

Collaborating with partners from the worlds of business and science on publicly funded projects enables us to identify technological trends more quickly and help to shape new business fields from their very infancy. Active participation in collaborative research projects make us an important partner in international research and development networks.

What is more, they allow us to position ourselves effectively for tackling whatever challenges the future might hold. Such projects are especially important when it comes to mastering the complex demands of automated driving. Together with our partners, we work on complex issues of automated mobility with the aim of putting safe and reliable automated driving systems on the road.

VDA flagship initiative for autonomous and connected driving

As part of the flagship VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry) initiative for autonomous and connected driving (VDA Leitinitiative autonomes und vernetztes Fahren) Bosch has been working with other leading companies from the German automotive and supply industry to develop the technologies and methods needed for the successful market launch of autonomous driving functions. Based on a common roadmap, precompetitive research and development requirements for autonomous and connected driving are identified, and the associated research projects are initiated. The focus is currently on methods for verification and validation of autonomous systems as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning in the automotive environment.

VVM – verification and validation methods for automated driving level 4 and 5

When fully automated and autonomous driving functions are introduced, testing and securing vehicle systems play a key role. Funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, 22 well-known partners from industry and research, led by consortiums from Bosch and BMW, jointly develop legally secure, time- and cost-efficient verification and validation methods (VVM – Verfikations- und Validierungsmethoden automatisierter Fahrzeuge Level 4 und 5). With VVM, it will be possible for the first time to include efficient testability in the development of fully automated and autonomous systems right from the start.

AI-based vehicle systems are confronted by an endless array of potential traffic situations. When fully automated and autonomous systems are launched, the question of how to prove that these will always be able to safely deal with such situations inevitably arises. VVM uses the complex application scenario of an urban intersection as an example for producing key innovations by combining virtual and real testing.

SetLevel4to5 – simulation-based development and testing of level 4 and 5 systems

With the introduction of fully automated and autonomous driving functions, simulation-based development and testing of vehicle systems is becoming increasingly important. Together with important partners from industry and research, Bosch is developing a simulation architecture and simulation models that can be used to virtually test automated and autonomous driving functions.The aim of the project SetLevel4to5 (simulationsbasiertes Entwickeln und Testen von Level 4 und 5 Systemen) is to create a modular, flexible and scalable validation platform.

MEC-View – mobile edge computing-based object detection for highly and fully automated driving

The goal of the MEC-View (Mobile Edge Computing basierte Objekterkennung für hoch- und vollautomatisiertes Fahren) project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, is to explore highly automated driving in complex urban-traffic situations. Such scenarios include automatically entering a priority road. MEC-View strives for safer and more efficient automated driving in urban traffic.The approach is based on the evaluation of infrastructure sensors, which supply object data for a model of the local surroundings in order to expand vehicle-based sensor systems’ detection range. A high-resolution digital map, a high-performance mobile-communications network, and a mobile edge computing (MEC) server are used to ensure the fusion of the infrastructure- and vehicle-based models of the surroundings.

5GCroCo – fifth-generation cross-border control

The possibility of providing cooperative, connected, and automated mobility (CCAM) services in various countries for vehicles crossing a number of national borders has enormous potential for innovative, new business models. Nonetheless, the seamless supply of connectivity and uninterrupted service provision along the respective borders also bring up some interesting technical challenges. The situation is particularly difficult in light of this scenario involving multiple countries, operators, telecommunication providers, and automobile manufacturers for every cross-border layout.

Against this backdrop, the 5GCroCo project funded by the European Commission brings together a powerful consortium from the European automotive and mobile-communication industries in order to develop innovations that span these two sectors.The goals are the realization and validation of 5G technologies in the cross-border corridor between France, Germany, and Luxembourg. In the course of this project, Bosch will develop and demonstrate teleoperated driving functions for application scenarios in both restricted-access areas and on national, cross-border highways.

ICT4CART – ICT infrastructure for connected and automated road transport1)

The project funded by the European Commission aims to design, implement, and test a versatile ICT (information and communication technology) infrastructure under real conditions that will facilitate the transition to higher automation levels in order to close existing gaps and work with specific key elements of ICT, namely hybrid connectivity, data management, data protection, and precise localization. ICT4CART is based on highly relevant application scenarios (urban and highway applications) that are demonstrated and validated at the test sites under real conditions. Bosch will equip test vehicles with automated driving functions and deploy these in the ICT4CART environment to demonstrate and validate the “highway” application scenario.

OSCCAR – Future occupant safety for crashes in cars

Future vehicle developments create a need to assess relevant accident scenarios not addressed by today’s regulations or consumer crash tests. OSCCAR will analyze occupant vehicle safety requirements for highly automated driving and define the technological developments needed to enable the automotive industry to design and develop new safety systems for advanced, safe and comfortable sitting positions in future vehicles.

3F – Driverless and fault-tolerant vehicle systems for low-speed range

The development of driverless shuttle buses at low speeds marks the next step on the way to autonomous driving. Driverless shuttle buses have to meet different requirements than, for example, highly automated cars. The prerequisite for the marketability of such vehicles are fault-tolerant components and their smooth interaction. One solution: redundancy, i.e. the double existence of safety-relevant functions. The collaborative project 3F - driverless and fault-tolerant vehicle systems for low-speed range (fahrerlose und fehlertolerante Fahrzeugsysteme für den Niedergeschwindigkeitsbereich) has been working on this.
