Community-based parking – the name basically says it all: the community of users ensures that every participating car driver finds an available parking space as easily as possible. The users’ vehicles identify spaces at the side of the road with their on-board sensors as they drive by. Newer vehicles are equipped with these sensors as standard, so no retrofitting is necessary. The collected data is sent to the cloud anonymously and processed there automatically. Smart software turns the raw data into useful information for drivers searching for a parking space. This includes a parking space map, parking predictions, real-time occupancy maps, and information on special parking situations.
The data benefits all users, enabling them to view parking information that is highly relevant to them in their vehicle at any time. The vacant parking spaces that are shown precisely match the requirements specified by the driver. So they are large enough for the respective vehicle and are, for instance, equipped with a charging station. All this adds up to a surprisingly straightforward user experience when searching for a parking spot in cities where parking space is at a premium. It does not matter which vehicle an individual user has, since the data can be collected and used by all vehicle makes.
This is how Community-based parking works
Community-based parking is a solution for all manufacturers that enables information about available parking to be collected and displayed by the vehicle. Thanks to a universal interface (API), the service is not dependent on the use of particular hardware – it can be implemented with Bosch components or using the manufacturer’s own hardware. Bosch takes care of the data processing and making the information available.
If desired, Bosch can also supply an end-to-end solution. This includes sensors for detecting vacant parking spaces, the connectivity hardware for sending and receiving data, and systems for displaying the information in the car.
Bosch has already launched various pilot projects to achieve a breakthrough for community-based parking. In 2018, series production started in Europe and the USA. Since 2019 additional cities have been added each month or are already being planned.
Through the cooperation of the community and the automobile manufacturers community-based parking represents a solution that will bring benefits for everyone.
Most modern vehicles already have parking sensors and connectivity hardware on board as standard. This enables transmitter vehicles to reliably detect parking spaces and send this data to the cloud in encrypted form. Receiver vehicles do not need any additional equipment fitted.
Vacant parking spaces can be displayed on the vehicle’s own on-board navigation unit or on a standard smartphone. This means drivers can also benefit from the convenient community-based parking service without having to fulfill any additional technical requirements.
