Characteristics of ESP® hev
for vehicles with front axle/rear axle brake circuit distribution (II distribution)
The regenerative braking system ESP® hev has been specifically developed for hybrid and electric vehicles with front axle/rear axle brake circuit distribution (II distribution). The system enables purely generative deceleration of up to 0.2 g.
ESP® hev decouples the rear axle braking circuit from the brake pedal each time braking takes place, regardless of whether the vehicle is decelerated using a generative or hydraulic process. The system continuously conceals the braking torque on the rear axle without disruptive transitions in deceleration. The pedal feel is solely dependent on the front axle braking circuit and is similar to the feel the driver is used to in conventional vehicles.
Decoupling of the rear axle allows the pedal feel and the design of the braking system to be more flexible in configuration.
ESP® hev is based on proven standard components. A pedal-travel sensor on the brake pedal and, if required, a mechanical or electrical vacuum pump, are added to the conventional braking system. ESP® hev is based on ESP® premium generation 9. It features a modified hydraulic unit and an additional suction line to the brake master cylinder reservoir. This allows ESP® hev to build up braking pressure on the rear axle wheel brakes independent of the driver’s actuation of the brake pedal. The packaging space required to install ESP® hev remains unchanged as compared to ESP® premium.
