Breakthrough in the mass market:
Bosch is revving up electromobility.

Electromobility is on the verge of its international breakthrough. Soaring registration figures in the major automobile markets of China, the USA and Europe represent the trend toward a dynamic yet resource-saving driving experience with electric powertrains. Bosch is accelerating electrification with efficient and economical solutions for cars as well as for two- and three-wheelers, trucks and even off-highway vehicles and baby strollers.

With the goal of becoming the market leader in the mass market for electromobility, Bosch has developed a comprehensive range which offers manufacturers everything they need to get off to a flying start in the market. This includes electric powertrain systems and solutions for a wide variety of applications and requirements: from hybrids to purely electric battery-powered drives through to fuel cell technology. Thanks to their scalability, the Bosch powertrain systems are easy to integrate and can be used flexibly in many vehicle segments. This reduces development times and costs.

Bosch has already realized more than 50 powertrain projects for electromobility in collaboration with manufacturers around the globe. In the process, Bosch supplies the various markets with specific solutions which meet local requirements and needs. For example, Bosch is consistently expanding its commitment in the global lead market for electromobility in China – with new manufacturing and development sites as well as components and systems which are adapted to local requirements.

eStroller system: electric drive system for baby strollers

With its eStroller system, Bosch offers an innovative micro-mobility solution specially for baby strollers. The electric drive system comprising perfectly coordinated components offers various convenience and support functions for parents. These include electric motor support when pushing the stroller uphill or for downhill walking, and automatic brake support. The system is handled entirely intuitively – without any switches or levers on the handlebar. Via Bluetooth, the eStroller can be connected to the respective smartphone app which offers additional features.

In cooperation with the Swedish stroller manufacturer Emmaljunga, the first baby stroller featuring the eStroller system from Bosch is making a world debut on the market and can be preordered with immediate effect on the Emmaljunga website.

Connected charging solutions for users, companies and charging station operators

Charging apps for free charge spots

A comprehensive and easy-to-use charging infrastructure is decisive for the breakthrough by electromobility into the mass market. To ensure its success, Bosch is applying intelligent solutions for end consumers, companies and charging station operators in equal measure. Charging apps from Bosch help users to find public and internet-enabled charging stations fast and reliably and pay for the charging services very conveniently. More than 40,000 charging points in eight countries are already part of the Europe-wide Bosch charging network.

Bosch also offers companies connected charging solutions with which employees, drivers of company cars and even entire company fleets can easily charge their vehicle batteries and settle the costs incurred in a safe and transparent manner. Furthermore, Bosch connects the charging stations of various suppliers to form a Europe-wide network which is constantly growing. This permits cross-supplier billing and expansion of individual suppliers’ potential customer bases.

Experience and new ideas put electromobility safely on the road

Services from ETAS

The electronic regulation of electric motors is basically the same as for classic powertrain systems, right? Yes and no! It goes without saying that the same requirements on safety, reliability, driving comfort and economic viability apply here. But there are a few other special features, too. For example, an electric motor needs to be regulated 10 times faster than a combustion engine. And the high voltages and current levels involved also need to be mastered safely. The experts at Bosch subsidiary ETAS know what it takes: with their dedicated engineering solutions, they help developers to put electromobility safely and reliably on the road.

Focus on China: pacemaker of the global automotive market

China is by far the world’s largest automotive market. With 23.7 million cars sold in 2018 and a 35-40 percent share of the world market in commercial vehicles, the so-called Middle Kingdom is significantly ahead of Europe and the USA. And with several hundred million potential customers, there is still plenty of scope for growing this figure. For every 1,000 inhabitants, there are around 170 cars in China. In Germany, the figure is around 690. And there is also a high demand for electromobility. Sales by Bosch in the NEV (new energy vehicles) segment have doubled in China since 2017. Bosch is therefore the market leader in electromobility for passenger cars.

Electromobility in China

As many as 1.26 million new energy vehicles (NEV) were sold in China in 2018 alone. This corresponds with an increase of 50 percent. The NEV segment includes battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and vehicles with fuel cell-electric drives. Despite the decline in funding for alternative drives by the Chinese government, the future belongs to the NEV segment in China. Bosch is also investing heavily there in expanding its own manufacturing, research and development sites for electromobility.

Bosch in China

Next to Germany, China is now the country with the highest number of Bosch associates, accounting for around 22 percent of international sales. And Bosch continues to expand in China: 2019 will see Bosch launch volume production of the eAxle in Taicang. Volume production of the 48-volt battery already commenced in 2018 at the Wuxi site.

“Our customers benefit just as much from our market experience as from our international research and development network. This enables Bosch to realize projects flexibly and with the greatest possible customer proximity – whether in Asia, Europe or North America.”

Electromobility: an important contribution toward improved air quality and climate protection

Electromobility can make an important contribution toward improving air quality in cities over the long term. Purely electric drives do not cause local CO2 or nitrogen oxide emissions. Hybrid vehicles can also significantly reduce emissions, especially when they are out and about in inner-city traffic in purely electric drive mode.

Bosch has set itself the goal of using innovative technology to contribute to improving air quality in cities, and is also developing many other solutions beyond electromobility to reduce emissions – thereby protecting air quality and the environment.
