Platform for innovations

Platform for innovations: the connected vehicle

Many vehicles are transmitters and receivers of a variety of data. They exchange information practically constantly with mobility providers, workshops, other vehicles, and the cloud. This digitalization and connectivity offers enormous potential for innovative business models. Bosch supports these developments with a wide range of services and secure connectivity solutions.

More software. More services. More car.

Through electrification, digitalization, and automation, modern cars have long since become digital platforms on wheels, constantly collecting, storing, and providing data for a wide variety of purposes. For example, to provide greater comfort and security and improved services. Equipped with powerful hardware and software, these vehicles are already forming the foundation

for an ecosystem that provides vehicle manufacturers and providers with great new opportunities for innovative products and services. Vehicle buyers, too, are given a completely new driving experience, since the car can be completely integrated into their digital worlds.

Software platform technologies

Benefits for all: customers, manufacturers, and third-party providers alike

Constantly up to date

In the future, vehicle manufacturers will continue defining and developing the car’s digital platform – meaning they will also establish the technical possibilities and limits. However, they will also have the chance to include the innovation power of third-party providers, creating a new digital ecosystem in which new products, services, and business models give rise to unique vehicle selling points that can be crucial for success. The vehicle can thus be kept constantly up to date throughout its entire life cycle – with all of the latest features and services that make it continuously attractive to customers.

The car as a digital platform

The car as a digital platform can also offer customers important benefits in the future: while a vehicle today is in its best condition when it leaves the factory, in the future it can be continuously optimized within the limits of its hardware. This means that the vehicle can also be improved after delivery, for example, by introducing new vehicle features and other updates and upgrades. Software solutions will therefore become a distinguishing factor for both vehicle manufacturers and fleet operators. They will also allow customers to equip their vehicles with new features and functions, much like they can today with their smartphones. This helps retain the vehicle’s value – or even boost it.

FNOS – an example of how straightforward service can be in the future

FNOS (first notification of service need)

With FNOS (first notification of service need), BMW and Bosch have presented a technical solution that enables manufacturers and independent workshops to access specific vehicle data in order to offer repair and maintenance services. The information is transmitted automatically from the vehicle to the preferred workshop. The workshop can then prepare for the service and send the customer a proposed appointment, a quote, and details about the maintenance. The text message is then displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment system. If the customer agrees, they can approve the appointment and bring the vehicle to the workshop.

New opportunities, new challenges

The vehicle as a digital platform provides the basis for an even more personalized driving experience thanks to functions, features, and applications, which can also come from third-party providers. This means, however, that all subsystems must be tailored to each other and integrated

into the overall system – and, at the same time, all requirements regarding road and vehicle safety as well as privacy must be met. Bosch supports its partners in this regard with a broad array of services and tools for vehicle development and operation.

Fostering innovation, preserving independence

As developers and providers, manufacturers will decide which technical possibilities vehicles will offer the end customer when they leave the factory and how they can continue to be personalized and utilized in offers and business models after delivery. In order to bring innovative services and

software solutions from other providers to the vehicle and at the same time maintain independence, two things are needed: a technology platform covering both the vehicle and the cloud, and an even closer collaboration between automotive manufacturers, suppliers, and providers.

Protecting the vehicle, ensuring road safety

Another challenge is protecting the vehicle from cyberattacks. All vehicle systems must therefore be properly secured – from the communication between the individual systems and the electrical architecture to the interfaces with the internet and the cloud. And even if intruders manage to get past individual security mechanisms, they must never gain access to the

system as a whole. To ensure this, continuously updated intrusion detection software must be able to protect the vehicle from threats. This promotes vehicle and road safety and protects driver data at the same time.

Enabling data use, maintaining self-determination

Vehicles collect data and can make it available for various uses. When combined with an access concept offered by independent administrators, this data can also be used for the provision of services. Drivers can later decide for themselves which services to use. Services are booked by choosing an app

and accepting the terms and conditions. The service can be canceled at any time by deactivating or uninstalling the app. This enables a concrete use of the platform data while ensuring that customers have full control over how their data is used.

Developing the car of the future. And delighting customers.

Developing the car of the future

In order to master the challenges of the future, Bosch is combining its comprehensive automotive expertise and IT competence with a deep understanding of vehicle data and many years of experience with mobility services. To this end, ETAS GmbH, a subsidiary of the Bosch Group, is focusing on the development of an open technology platform for software solutions, highly integrated development tools, and vehicle-related cloud

platform services. This approach is based on developments related to zone-oriented E/E architectures in combination with vehicle computers and enables easy integration of software into the vehicle. Software solutions thus become a differentiating factor for vehicle manufacturers – enabling them to continuously equip their vehicles with the latest features.

Together with Bosch

Together with Bosch

Bosch sees itself as a trailblazer and a partner who provides its customers the necessary elements and resources for vehicle operation and vehicle development. The portfolio is designed to be modular, allowing individual elements to be replaced as needed. In this context, for example, the use of tried-and-tested software enables a much shorter time to market. At the same time, it presents the opportunity to equip vehicles with new functions and services quickly and efficiently – and to provide the user of the vehicle with true added value. Again, and again, and again…
